What is Reflexology?

Reflexology dates back thousands of years to ancient Egypt, India and China. Hieroglyphics and writings suggest that these practices were used for healing. It is a unique method of acupressure therapy which aims to optimise both physical and emotional health.
Thumb pressure is applied to specific reflex points on the feet and hands which correspond to all the various parts of the body. The treatment brings balance to the body and its systems caused by stress, injury or illness.
I have completed training in clinical reflexology, maternity and postnatal reflexology that has given me a greater understanding of conditions such as cancer, autoimmune disorders and the treatment needs of mums to be. Keep an eye on my blog and social media accounts to see what I’m up to!

  How can reflexology help?

Reflexology is one way that we can reduce stress. The nervous system as a whole responds to stimulus, and by applying pressure to specific reflex points on the feet, a calming message to peripheral nerves is carried through the central nervous system allowing the body to relax. This relaxation increases blood flow to the body and it’s organs and systems which allows movement toward homeostasis and optimal functioning. Many people find relief from anxiety, tension and insomnia. The treatments can also help with musculoskeletal pain, hormonal imbalance and digestive issues. Your time in the treatment room will induce deep relaxation and guarantee that time for yourself.

What to expect

Reflexology sessions usually take around an hour, the first session being slightly longer so we can discuss your current health picture and identify your treatment needs.

The treatment will take place in a reclining chair or couch, you can remain fully clothed and will just need to expose your feet and lower legs. Your feet will be wrapped in warm towels, followed by a gentle muscle warm up.

The reflexology treatment consists of thumb and finger pressure applied to specific points on the feet that correspond to all the various parts of the body. Reflexology is a very calming treatment to receive, many people report  complete mind-body relaxation.

Clients experience a range of sensations and feelings during or after their treatment. Common feed back can include: complete relaxation, warmth and tingling arising from the feet upwards, sensations at various areas in the body, visual display of colours, some individuals fall asleep! Slight tenderness can sometimes be felt in the reflex areas of the feet, this usually indicates congestion or imbalances.

What to expect after your treatment-most common: relaxation, feelings of wellbeing, feelings of balance, increased energy, emotional release, increased elimination, a good nights sleep, symptoms exacerbating for 24hours. Subsequent treatments: resilience to stress, reduction in unwanted symptoms-such as aches and pains, improved digestion, improved mood and energy, stress reduction and wellbeing.

There is no right way to feel and your body will simply release what it needs to. Generally speaking you should feel an improvement with each session.

Maternity reflexology

After receiving reflexology throughout both of my pregnancies, it inspired me to expand my knowledge in maternity related issues so I could support mums to be on their pregnancy journey. Sessions can usually begin from week 13 (second trimester).
Maternity clients find relief from pregnancy related symptoms such as morning sickness, sleeplessness, digestive disturbance, aches and pains. The treatments can be enjoyed throughout pregnancy to labour and birth.
Reflexology postpartum is a wonderful way to bond with your baby and support recovery. I can offer treatments at home at this stage so you can cuddle up and feed your baby if needed.
The treatment will gently support your body through the healing process, support breastfeeding and help to balance hormones.
*Research shows that women who have regular reflexology treatments during pregnancy have had shorter and less intense labour experiences*
